This is the abandoned church that Carr tried to save from demolition, now used as Newton Field Centre (although it may now have closed). The church is based on St Faith's church at Newton, sometimes called Newton in the Willows, near Kettering. Osgodby or Osgoodby is an area near Thirsk in Yorkshire. The story is set around the church in the village of Oxgodby in 1920. ![]() The novel won the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1980 and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in the same year. This is Carr's fifth novel and is widely regarded as his masterpiece. ![]()
